What We Learned

Leaders Impact on Organization

Ms. Mary Jo White as ASPCA Board Chair, was instrumental in facilitating the groundbreaking partnership between the ASPCA and the New York City Police Department, an alliance that elevated law enforcement dedication to fighting animal cruelty and is now producing triple-digit increases in animal cruelty arrests by the NYPD and victimized animals treated by the ASPCA. Mary Jo’s commitment to the cause of animal welfare has always been outstanding and an inspiring model for others. With her extensive experience in the justice system, she particularly understands the vital role animal welfare laws and regulations play in creating a more humane society.

Matthew Bershadker was named president of the ASPCA in June, 2013. He first joined the organization in 2001. He was in charge of the programs that confront animal cruelty and suffering across the country. While still being part of the ASPCA he was also a part of ACG. He launched the ACG organizations Field Investigations and Response Team to provide skilled support during large-scale puppy mill seizures, dog fighting raids, animal hoarding cases, and natural disasters. He also oversaw the development of the ASPCA's cruelty intervention advocacy program, an initiative to help protect companion animals in danger of potential abuse or neglect by addressing the root causes of animal cruelty and helping establish sustainable assistance. Mr. Bershadker went over and beyond with helping the ASPCA in many different ways. He has helped tremendously make the organization so successful and earned his spot as the organizations president and CEO.

Leadership Styles

The leadership styles that we looked at and learned about were autocratic leader, bureaucratic leadership, charismatic leadership, democratic leadership, laissez-faire leadership, people-oriented leadership, servant leadership, task-oriented leadership, transitional leadership, and transnational leadership. We looked into all of these styles to compare them to each of the leaders we chose for the ASPCA.
